Would you like to cycle through the vast expanse of the Ebro river mouth? The combination of the Val de Zafán Greenway and the Ebro Natural Trail offers you exactly that: a unique and authentic cycle tourism experience, flat, safe and full of cultural, environmental and gastronomic delights to enjoy with family or friends.

To make it happen, we propose two well-defined stages, from north to south, designed for families, couples and people who want to discover the natural and heritage values of this corner of the Terres de l'Ebre.

The proposal combines the final section of the Val de Zafán Greenway —from Tortosa to Amposta— with a stretch of the Ebro Natural Trail (GR-99) to Riumar, already within the Ebro Delta Natural Park. This itinerary follows a mostly flat or slightly descending profile, and runs along well-signposted paths, cycle lanes and natural trails that allow for safe and comfortable cycling.

Stage 1: Tortosa → Amposta (approx. 24–26 km)

The adventure begins in Tortosa, a city steeped in history where it is well worth getting lost in its streets before getting on the bike. The Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Suda Castle and the Royal Colleges are part of a rich architectural heritage that, for generations, has shaped the relationship between nature and society, always sheltered by the Ebro.

From Tortosa, we suggest following the Val de Zafán Greenway route heading south, parallel to the Ebro river. After passing along Avinguda de l'Estat, make your way to the right-hand canal. As you progress, the landscape becomes increasingly open, between rice fields and panoramic views of the river. Enjoy the natural surroundings and take note of the canals and orchards that shape the landscape of this stretch of the Baix Ebre, and listen to the sounds of the water and the birds.

The path is predominantly flat, with well-signposted transition points, allowing for relaxed cycling with no surprises. Following the canal along the old Val de Zafán Greenway, you can capture photographs of the Pla de les Sitges and the Torre de Vila-seca before passing through Vinallop. Continuing straight ahead, on the outskirts of Amposta, you reach the Torre de la Carrova, a magnificent medieval structure and a fine example of the set of towers in the Ebro valley that were built to watch over and defend these lands so fiercely disputed throughout history. Did you know that a Roman villa has also been documented right next to it?

Once you arrive in Amposta, you are at the heart of the Delta; from here begins the second stage that will take you all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

Stage 2: Amposta → Riumar (approx. 28–30 km)

The stretch linking Amposta and Riumar forms part of the Ebro River Natural Trail (GR-99) and crosses one of the most unique areas of the Delta Natural Park. This route is practically flat, very well maintained and particularly well suited to leisure bikes or families looking to round off the route with a relaxed yet captivating stage. The stage will lead you to the river mouth, passing through Deltebre, the Muntell de les Verges and the Mirador del Zigurat, until you reach the seafront promenade of Riumar.

After crossing the Suspension Bridge of Amposta and following the bank of the Ebro, the path accompanies the river as it winds past rice fields and riverside woodland. The vegetation and the calm of the water accompany every pedal stroke. Take the opportunity to stop at some of the wonderful viewpoints to watch birds.

The arrival at the sea marks the end of the stage. Riumar, with its seafront promenade and open views over the Mediterranean, makes for an emotional finale to a journey that has combined freshwater landscapes, farmland and sea. It is time to get off the bike and treat yourself to a gastronomic celebration with the excellent and authentic cuisine of the Delta.

The route across these two stages is flat and very well signposted, making this itinerary accessible to people with varying levels of experience. You will find that the cycle lanes and natural paths of the Amposta–Riumar stretch are widely used and very visible, which adds to the sense of safety. There are also options for interpretive stops with information about riverside vegetation and the functioning of the Delta ecosystems.

To complete the route, we suggest returning from Riumar to Tortosa either by bike or using a transport service offered by Deltaventur — advance booking is always required a few days before the service.
