The route runs through a protected area of the Ebro Delta Natural Park, which will surprise you with the variety of environments that can be observed there. Part of the excursion coincides with a nature trail that starts at Bassa de les Olles and reaches Goleró. From this point, the route returns along the edge of rice fields and following the boundaries of the protected area.
The highlights of this route are Bassa de les Olles, Goleró and the Ebro Delta. Bassa de les Olles is the smallest lagoon in the Ebro Delta. Despite its small size, its privileged location in front of Fangar Bay and its surrounding rice fields allow it to host an important population of water birds and a varied flora that is difficult to find in such small areas.
Goleró is the final stretch of an old branch of the Ebro River that connects the river, near Illa de Gràcia, with Fangar Bay. It is possible that it was the river’s mouth in the 11th century. Today, it is used to drain water from the rice fields when they are emptied before preparing the land for the next harvest.
For its part, the Ebro Delta offers one of the most attractive lagoon landscapes in the Mediterranean. The interior of this small earthly paradise is dominated by rice fields, which cause the landscape to change completely depending on the season.
In winter, the landscape is flooded with the brown tones of fertile soil. In spring, time seems to stand still in a fantasy-like territory where the fields turn into mirrors of water when they are flooded. In summer, the rice plants break through the water and a vast green carpet stretches for kilometres, until at the end of summer the rice grains turn as golden as the sun while waiting for the harvest.
Gorge of the Bassa de les Olles
Place where the Les Olles reservoir empties its waters into the Fangar bay between the Arenal and Goleró beaches. A bridge allows you to cross the waters to make a complete circuit of the reservoir.
Tips
- The proposed route only follows the GR 92 up to Arenal Beach. Beyond that point, the itinerary is not specifically marked as a hiking trail. However, you can follow the path without problems using the itinerary description and map.
- This excursion can be done at any time of the year. We recommend autumn, spring, and sunny winter days. A true delight!
- In summer, the heat can be really intense, so it’s a good idea to do the route early in the day to avoid the strongest sun hours. Remember to bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.
- The itinerary time has been calculated assuming a leisurely pace. Depending on the stops you make to enjoy the landscape, the route may take considerably longer.
- If you need more information about this or other routes, we’ll be happy to assist you at the Tourist Office.
